ABSTRACT
One of the most common reasons for reporting to a urogynecological physiotherapist is scarring after surgery: gynecological (e.g., hysterectomy), urogynecological (e.g., treatment of pelvic organ prolapse and/or incontinence) or obstetric (e.g., cesarean section). The consequences of the surgery may include hypertrophic scarring or keloids, chronic pelvic pain, dyspareunia, infertility, non-specific gastrointestinal, urinary, reproductive complaints, musculoskeletal pain syndromes, abnormal posture and gait patterns. In order to counteract or reduce the consequences of postoperative adhesions, scar treatment should be implemented in a planned manner using appropriate pharmacological agents as a base. Many of the dedicated preparations for this purpose have unproven efficacy, or the efficacy has not been studied. The article discusses the active substances included in preparations for scar treatment, each time detailing: their characteristics, mechanism of action, pharmacological aspects and description of available scientific studies. The author’s plan for scar treatment is also presented, taking into account the stages of wound healing, and the methods in which the use of pharmacological agents is justified are singled out.
