ABSTRACT
Barrett’s esophagus (BE) is a chronic gastrointestinal disease associated with transformation of the esophageal squamous epithelium to cylindrical epithelum. The pathology occurs secondarily to chronic gastroesophageal reflux. This process affects up to 5% of the general population and is the only known precursor to oesophageal adenocarcinoma. Advanced endoscopic imaging techniques with appropriately collected biopsy material play a critical role in establishing the diagnosis. Treatment involves endoscopic techniques consisting of local removal or destruction of metaplastic, dysplastic or neoplastic transformations, as will be presented in the following paper.
