ABSTRACT
Chronic sinusitis is a condition in which cavities around nasal passages as well as nasal and paranasal sinus mucosa become inflamed for over 12 weeks. The classification of EPOS – European Position Paper on Rhinosinusitis and Nasal Polyps of 2012 – distinguishes chronic rhinosinusitis without nasal polyps (CRSsNP) and chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP). These days, in a supplementary treatment of both disorders, the Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (ESS) comes as a treatment of choice. The work presents an analysis of the impact of ESS on the pulmonary function and airway responsiveness in patients with CRSsNP, CRSwNP and nasal septum deviation treated with septoplasty. All of them underwent skin testing with inhalant allergens, spirometry, and bronchial challenge test with methacholine. ESS procedure in patients suffering from CRSsNP and CRSwNP does not have a significant impact on improvement of the pulmonary function, but considerably contributes to reduction of bronchial responsiveness, particularly in patients with CRSwNP.
