ABSTRACT
Urinary tract infections are a severe problem in pregnant and lactating women. They are usually treated with antibiotics, which have certain side effects and can negatively affect developing fetus. Cranberry and its extracts are often recommended for pregnant and lactating women as an alternative or complementary therapy to antibiotic treatment therapy. It is commonly believed that the use of cranberry in antibacterial treatment is safe for both mother and developing fetus. The article describes potentially undesirable mechanisms of action contained in cranberrie’s compounds on the development of fetus and newborns, emphasizing its potential anti-angiogenic effect on the fetus.
