ABSTRACT
Cushing’s disease (CD) is a state of hypercortisolemia caused by overproduction of adrenocorticotropic hormone. Treatment of choice is transsphenoidal surgery performed by an experienced neurosurgeon. Successful surgical treatment is often linked with adrenal insufficiency, follow‑up and treatment of which is of the utmost importance during postsurgical care. The aim of the study was to investigate the duration of adrenal recovery in CD after successful surgery. Methods. The study involved 23 patients after successful surgery performed due to CD, performed in Neurosurgery Department of the Military Institute of Medicine. Results. Adrenal recovery after 3, 6, 12, 18 months was achieved in 4 (17.4%), 4 (17.4%), 5 (21.7%) and 7 (30.4%) patients, respectively. Conclusion. After 18 months of successful neurosurgery treatment of CD we can expect full recovery of adrenal functions in almost 90% of cases. Appointment pattern presented below enables early identification of patients with adrenal recovery which leads to optimization of substitution treatment with hydrocortisone.
